Hachioji Castle (八王子城) is a mountain castle constructed by Hojo Ujiteru in the north of current Takao Station. Ujiteru had stayed in Takiyama Castle as his base at first, but after the castle was attacked and almost fallen by Takeda Shingen and Katsuyori in 1569, he decided to construct and move to stronger and larger Hachioji Castle. The construction age is unknown, but it is said to begin constructing in 1570s and move there in 1580s.
In the Odawara siege by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590, while the lord Ujiteru was absent, the castle was attacked by Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu and fallen only in a day.
In addition, the origin of name "Hachioji" (literally eight princes) derived from the legend that a monk Myoko met the god Gozu-tennou with eight princes while he was training himself in the mountain then he enshrined Hachioji Gongen shrine. Afterward Ujiteru set the gods as the guardian deity of the castle, and named his castle Hachioji Castle.
The structure of the castle is divided into Yogai district consists of mountaintop including the main enclosure and the subsequent ridge, Residencial district consists of the site of the main palace and Negoya district consists of the castle town(around current Guidance center). The range extends to at least East-West approximately 2km, north and south approximately 1km.
(The map was based on Digital Japan Portal Web Site powered by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan. *the location of enclosures or others are my speculation, so they may not be correct.)I went to the site of castle by bus on that day. There is the bus bound for Hachioji Castle site from Takao Station only on Saturday and Sunday.
(1)Next to the bus stop, there was Hachioji Castle site Guidance center. Here, I could obtain a brochure and the information of the castle.
If you go there by car, there is a parking lot next to the Guidance center.

At first, I went toward the Main Palace.
(2)This was Ashida enclosure near the entrance.

(3)Site of Ote gate
From here I went up and walked along the path looking down on the river.

(4)This was a revived bridge. Once the battle began, the bridge was fallen to intercept enemies.

This was
koguchi (entrance of enclosure, literally mouth of tiger) of the Main Palace. Considerably many part of the stairs and the pavement was remains at that time.

And this was the entrance of Main Palace

(5)The site of Main Palace became large open space. There were the cornerstones at the place where a palace had been built once.

(6)Waterfall of Main Palace ― but no water was streaming. When the castle was fallen, because women, children and military commanders committed suicide at upper reaches, the water of the river had turned red for three days and nights.

Once I came back around the entrance, then I climbed the mountain.
Small enclosures were arranged along the ridge.
(7)This was Kaneko enclosure which was the largest of such enclosures. Kaneko Ieshige was said to be defending there.

(8)This was the site of Sakumon gate at the eighth station. The origin of the name is unclear.

There were middle sized enclosures including the main enclosure around the mountaintop.
(9)This was one of them, Komiya enclosure.

(10)This was other Matsuki enclosure. There was a fierce battle between defender of the enclosure Nakayama Ienori and attacker Maeda Toshiie.

(11)This was the site of main enclosure. It wasn't large enough to build a big architecture.

Usually we would return from the main enclosure, The signboard of Tsume-no-shiro (outer citadel used for defending the main castle) made me walk more.
(12)This was Koma-biyashi (literally the rest place of horses). It was a trench at the halfway point of the main enclosure and Tsume-no-shiro.

I was walking the narrow ridge for a while. I felt it was not a path inside the castle but a fugitive warrior route. Actually we can go to Mt.Takao or Mt.Jinba through this route.
(13)At last, I arrived at Tsume-no-shiro after finishing climbing the slope. It took around 30 minutes from the main enclosure.
There was a monument named "the trace of Hachioji Castle castle tower", but I didn't think it was a place to build a castle tower. Probably there would be a turret which protected a rear side.

We can view Tokyo area in front of Komiya enclosure.
